Use of Mussel Spat Rope for Fish Passage in Culverts

Status:  Complete
Report Date:  03/15/2018

Summary:

Researchers investigated the performance of mussel spat rope as a low-cost technique to assist small fish passage through Minnesota culverts. The rope has long, dense fibers along its length that create a small corridor of reduced water velocity and turbulence, allowing small fish to swim more easily against a current and to use the rope's fibers for refuge. Researchers observed fish behavior near the rope in laboratory simulations and in the field at two Minnesota box culverts.
