Monitoring Iron Enhanced Stormwater Infiltration Basin in the Real World

Status:  Active
Project Start Date:  09/18/2015

Summary:

Iron filings added to filtration media in laboratory settings have shown promise to help reduce dissolved phosphorus in runoff. To test this in a real world setting, MnDOT Metro District installed iron filings in the engineered filtration media at the TH 610 Bruce Pond Filtration Basin. We have been monitoring the basin since 2012 with the assistance of the Office of Environmental Stewardship's Testing Unit. This project will continue to analyze phosphorus at the infiltration basin for an additional five years and assist with the data analysis, performance evaluation of the pond and project summary report.
