Phased Array Ultrasonic Steel Corrosion Mapping for Bridges and Ancillary Structures

Summary:

MnDOT used the phased array ultrasonic testing (PAUT) system to conduct corrosion mapping on steel bridges. The system provided more accurate corrosion data than did single-beam ultrasonic testing and traditional field measuring methods. More accurate data allows bridge engineers to calculate bridge load capacities more precisely and, ultimately, to ensure the integrity of bridge structures. With better data, bridge engineers can also make better maintenance recommendations that save money by preventing unnecessary and expensive repairs. The PAUT tool's quick 3-D scanning system also reduces fieldwork time, which can further lower MnDOT bridge inspection costs.
