Design Standards for Unobstructed Sight Lines at Left-turn Lanes

Status:  Active
Project Start Date:  07/09/2018

Summary:

Previous studies have shown that improving sight lines for left-turning traffic can improve the safety of intersections and reduce total crashes. Limited sign distance can also increase critical gaps and reduce capacity of left-turn movements. Developing Minnesota-specific guidelines to improve sight lines at intersections can improve capacity while decreasing vehicle delay, travel time, fuel consumption, and environmental pollution.
