Applications of Computational Fluid Dynamics for River Simulation: State of the Practice

Status:  Complete
Report Date:  06/29/2013

The purpose of this technical report is to assist the State in determining the state of the practice of CFD for river simulation. The work focuses on investigating the following: Finding out how CFD is being used to model river flows around piers; single and parallel bridges; ice and debris; bendway weirs and other river training structures; Determining if CFD has been used to simulate sediment transport and scour under bridges with and without piers; and Identifying who (which state DOTs) uses CFD for the above mentioned purposes, what software is being used, what this software costs, and the cost to conduct studies of this kind.
